There'southward other familiar elements like the "slippers" and fine dress for going to the thou place, but no cabbage wagon and midnight deadlines, and the "Prince" is more than mysterious, harder to ascertain. The latter office and the caption for why our cinder girl is "crude-faced" make me say this one also has but a wee pinch of Beauty and the Brute as well. The art is keen, looks like paintings and the scenes complement the text very well, and the illustrations probably look much ameliorate in impress than in my Kindle edition.

I have read many versions of this archetype Native American "Cinderella" story, but never have I read a version with such dramatic illustrations. "The Rough-Face Girl" is a Native American tale retold by Rafe Martin forth with illustrations past David Shannon and it details about how a young miserable girl realizes that having a pure heart can set her free. "The Rough-Face Girl" is a truly vivid tale for children to savor for many years!

In a village nigh Lake Ontario, in that location lived a poor man who had 3 daughters. The two older daughters were vain and cruel and they treated their youngest sister cruelly past making her exercise all the housework to the point where the younger sister was charred and looked hideous. I 24-hour interval, the invisible existence who was a rich and powerful man wanted to have a wife and he would only marry the adult female who could see him.

Before I have read this volume, I had read another version of the pop "Cinderella" Native American tale called "Sootface" which was written by Robert D. San Souci. Well by this time, I have already known this story and it was no surprise that it was again about a young girl who was mistreated by her sisters, nonetheless her pure heart wins her the homo of her dreams. Rafe Martin's writing is extremely dramatic and uplifting and I loved the fashion that the youngest daughter did everything she could to win the prince'south heart including making her ain clothes despite being ridiculed by her hamlet and her sisters. It was besides nice how Rafe Martin showed the sisters' cruelness to their youngest sister as something and then undesirable and how their wicked ways caused their undoing towards the end. David Shannon's illustrations are extremely marvelous in this book equally all the characters look extremely cute, peculiarly of the artwork of the blueish skies and I really loved the image of the invisible human being shown as some kind of symbol in the sky every bit his optics are shown as birds and a rainbow expresses his nose and information technology blends then well with the sky that I did not recognize this prototype until I look closer. Probably my favorite image of the invisible existence was when he was riding through the Milky Way that was made of stars. I also loved the Native American clothing the characters wear equally they all look so stunning, especially of the brutal sisters' wear as they accept beaded moccasins and gorgeous necklaces that make them sparkle through the illustrations.

Parents should know that there are some scary images in this book such as how some characters are shown in shadows and their faces are darken and wait a little menacing. While these images might scare smaller children, the images that might scare smaller children the most would be when the youngest girl meets the invisible man and his large advent in the dark might look a bit frightening. Parents might want to read this book first before they read information technology to their kid to see if they do non mind scary images.

Overall, "The Rough-Face Daughter" is a truly memorizing volume for children who are interested in Native American folktales and who honey "Cinderella" styled tales. I would recommend this book to children ages 5 and upwardly since there are some images that might scare smaller children.

The Rough-Face Girl is the third retelling of this seemingly widespread tale from the Algonquin peoples of native Due north America, following upon Terri Cohlene'due south Little Firefly: An Algonquian Fable and Robert D. San Souci'south Sootface: An Ojibwa Cinderella Story , that I have read. I found Martin's telling engaging, and David Shannon's accompanying artwork beautiful, although I think I adopt the San Souci, past just a margin. I do discover it interesting, when considering this story, that the heroine'south prospective bridegroom seems supernatural, with his bow made of the rainbow, and his sled made of the Milky Way. Is he meant to be a spirit beingness? Does Rough-Face Girl's wedlock with him accept some greater significance, beyond the usual 'kindness is rewarded with connubial elation' that one sees in this kind of story? I'd love to know more about Martin's specific sources for this telling, just unlike San Souci, he does not provide that data. Still, leaving aside these questions, this is an enjoyable story, 1 that is paired with strikingly cute artwork. Recommended to young folklore enthusiasts, and to readers interested in worldwide variants of the Cinderella story.

The Rough Face Daughter was awarded the CBC children's volume of the year. Illustrated by David Shannon

The stories plot begins very similar to the traditional Cinderella version where two mean sisters mistreat the kind sister making her life distressing and miserable. In this story we learn that the rough face girl is given that name as the result of daily torture received by her hard hearted sisters.
Her sisters like in the traditional Cinderella tale are hateful and cruel and are disliked by the reader. The Rough Face girl similar Cinderella is empathized by the reader and wants her to find happiness. In this story the love of a very rich, powerful, handsome invisible man is sought after and only the person that can run into him will exist the one to ally him. The sisters dressed in beautiful clothing seek to meet the invisible homo and are turned downward after unsuccessfully passing the sisters exam to show they accept seen the invisible man. And then the Crude Face girl left with nothing simply big moccasins and a wearing apparel fabricated out of dead birch goes to meet the invisible human being and eventually marry just not before she takes a bathroom in the magical lake.

This story is beautifully told keeping the authentic theme of Cinderella and the Native American folktale. You can come across the similarities of the tradicional Cinderella, the mean sister and the lovable girl. Like the traditional Cinderella in that location is a marriage but Rough Face girl carries more of mystical side with a past more darkness which can exist portrayed by the dark colores used. t'southward illustrations are like paintings that respectfully represent the Native American culture and allow the reader to take a glimpse of the fourth dimension and village the story took place without overpowering the story.
This story tin be used for 2 grades and to a higher place. The complexity of this story may be to confusing for younger students to understand. This can be used to teach students about authors lesson and how pretty clothing and hair tin hide a bad heart.

Martin's story puts a spin on the classic story of Cinderella, where everyone in the tribe wants to ally the Invisible Beingness, but only the woman who tin can meet him is allowed to marry him. In the terminate, The Rough Face Daughter is the only one who sees the true nature of the Invisible Being and is transformed into the beautiful woman that the Invisible Being had seen all along. This story tells the Indian legend spreading messages about true beauty and nature, going beyond superficial looks and holding. Martin illustrates a beautiful story based in a diverse setting that allows the reader to become emerged in a different civilisation, notwithstanding meet how these themes of kindness and beauty can be found in any culture or lodge. The Invisible Being and his sis demonstrate how love and dazzler are non grounded in superficial beauty standards, but about the heart, how people treat others and being one with the nature effectually them. I chose this equally my WOW book because I beloved the various versions of Cinderella from other cultures, however I have never read this one and it is non the common Cinderella story that we are all familiar with. The illustrations are gorgeous, showing wonderful images of the deep text. I also loved that this story was written based on an Algonquin Indian Fable considering I have never heard of the tribe, so it gave me the opportunity to learn more about their culture, beliefs and values of wisdom, nature and sensitivity. This story goes beyond your typical love story, making it not equally predictable and cheesy, which I idea to be really refreshing.

In the classroom, I would utilize this volume as a read aloud considering it is a motion-picture show volume short enough to read during class fourth dimension, but complex enough to incorporate deeper comprehension strategies. My start idea of how this book can exist used in the classroom instructionally is integrating information technology with the social studies curriculum. Since social studies does not accept very much allotted time, incorporating didactics well-nigh civilisation and indigenous American Indian groups, which are both aligned with NC Social Studies standards. Having students record observations from the book well-nigh Native American dress, values, traditions, etc. (pg. 6 describes some) (after the class has read the text and then discussing it can permit the teacher to introduce of import social studies aspects while besides building students' fluency, comprehension and vocabulary. The text structures and genre of Folklore can exist discussed here as well, as many ethnic groups take potent, meaningful legends like this one.

A second instructional thought for using this book is to cease and inquire questions during the read aloud that reinforces students' learning and reading comprehension. Some question ideas may include:
(Pg. 2-3) Look at the drawings on the wigwam in this picture (define the word wigwam=home for Algonquin Indians). What do you detect? What do you remember these tell u.s.?
(Pg. 9) Allow's make some predictions. What do you think is going to happen with these two girls? Why do you lot think they're lying?
(Pg. 16) How is the Rough-Face up girl unlike from her two sisters? Where do you see this in the text?
(Towards end of book) Remember the drawings on the wigwam. How practise we see these with the Invisible Existence?

A third activity I would like to implement is reading a diverseness of other versions of Cinderella and so comparing them. This could be other cultural versions and folklores, but students can compare main characters, plots and key details. They could practice a writing response, graphic organizer, story map or grouping project.

c. I would use this story for storytelling to both a child and to a group. Information technology'd be a bang-up bedtime story, simply it tin can likewise be fun to tell a group of children, like about princess stories are told today through movies and books to the masses.

I.Love.THIS.BOOK. I remember reading this volume in elementary school and thinking it was awesome. Cinderella has ever been ane of my favorite stories, and this i does not disappoint. It shows a different perspective from a not-anglo saxon point of view that is refreshing.

Educational activity Point

This volume would exist a corking book to apply in first-grade when teaching folktales. We could read the classic Cinderella and The Rough-Face Girl and compare and dissimilarity the similarities and differences. They tin can too encounter if they are able to discern the same moral out of each story.

I loved information technology! ❤️ It was cute. This is and then much improve than many other versions of Cinderella. In the original Cinderella, she was named later Cinders considering she was dirty and I practice believe she was actually slightly disfigured from the burn and cinders. I like that this version keeps that element.

I think the reason she can encounter the invisible man and no one else can is because she sees beauty within and non superficially. She sees the human being spiritually and in nature.

I love the emphasis on beauty

I dear the accent on dazzler within. And the accent on beauty every bit a spiritual affair rather than physical. Because how tin one be beautiful if a 1 has an ugly heart?!

After all, one tin only be beautiful if they are equally beautiful on the inside every bit they are on the outside.

Of all the Cinderella stories I accept read or heard, The Crude-Face Daughter, based on an Algonquin Indian tale, is i of my favorites.

Information technology earns that stardom for the variation it takes on the theme, depicting the "Cinderella" character to actually have physically scars--tell-tale signs of cinders--on her aspect. This is in contrast to others, including the Disney version, that cast Cinderella as a victim of servitude or ill-will, though not bodily damage. Every bit a event, yous are immediately sympathet

Of all the Cinderella stories I have read or heard, The Crude-Face Girl, based on an Algonquin Indian tale, is one of my favorites.

It earns that distinction for the variation it takes on the theme, depicting the "Cinderella" grapheme to actually have physically scars--tell-tale signs of cinders--on her aspect. This is in contrast to others, including the Disney version, that cast Cinderella every bit a victim of servitude or ill-volition, though non actual impairment. Equally a result, you are immediately sympathetic to the Rough-Confront Girl and are pulling for her, not simply to 'get the guy,' but to be recognized for her goodness, her beauty of personality and heart.

I also notice the picture book superior for its dramatic illustrations drawn by David Shannon, following in the mold of Run into, rather than No, David!.

Definitely perfect for a fairy tale comparison written report, or simply to bask every bit a read aloud. Lovely, lovely.

Plucked this from a nearby volume display at work out of curiosity, and was glad I did then. The story is a simple retelling of Cinderella set in an Algonquian hamlet, making for a nice new change of pace. However, where this really shines are the accompanying the illustrations, which are just flat-out gorgeous.
